The city of Waterbury boasts a rich history in high school boys basketball – ranging from Crosby High’s achievements in national tournaments in the early 1920s, through a storied period centered at the City Armory in the middle of the last century, followed by a growth into more modern times culminating with Crosby and then Sacred Heart’s dominating the first two decades of the 2000s.

Scholastic teams from the Brass City have captured 17 CIAC state titles in the sport and won all but two of the last 52 Naugatuck Valley League championships, with many players having gone on to outstanding collegiate and professional careers.

This website – WaterburyHoops.com – was started to focus on the city’s hoops history and establish a base for an interactive community around that history. Begun by Michael Griffin, a Crosby graduate who is currently in the process of writing a book about the history of high school basketball in Waterbury, the site will present selected articles on past achievements of city teams and players, offer season reviews from previous decades (chapters from Mike’s upcoming book), compile lists of award winners and record holders for city schools, and seek input from site visitors and other contributors via comments, the site’s online discussion forum and story submissions.

Whether you’re here to relive some the athletic achievements of older hoopsters (or inform today’s youth about those who came before them!), to seek an archive of historical records and statistics, or to engage with others in a central location to discuss city hoops, we hope you enjoy your time here and continue to visit as the site grows over time.
